5G Open for Business: Ericsson showcases 5G technology live in the Philippines
- Demonstrates data speeds of 23 Gbps using its 5G trial system – a first ever in the Philippines
- Part of two-day technology showcase, ‘‘Unleashing the Next Wave – 30th Anniversary, Ericsson Philippines, marking 30 years of Ericsson in the Philippines
- 5G to enable a USD 1.8 billion revenue potential for telecom operators in Philippines by 2026, says Ericsson Study
Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) today presented a demonstration of 5G technology using its 5G trial system and demonstrated data speeds of 23 Gbps, a first ever in the Philippines, as part of its 30th Anniversary celebrations in the country. The two-day technology showcase ‘‘Unleashing the Next Wave- Ericsson Philippines 30th Anniversary”, marks Ericsson’s 30 years of operations in the Philippines. The technology showcase also includes 5G use cases in 3D Augmented Reality, Mining and Healthcare, along with the latest 5G-ready products and solutions from Ericsson. Ericsson has an end-to-end 5G platform comprising 5G core, radio, and transport portfolios together with OSS/BSS, network services and security.
The 5G demonstration reinforces Ericsson’s commitment to bringing in the latest technology innovations to Philippines and developing the 5G ecosystem in the country to support a Digital Philippines.
Nunzio Mirtillo, Head of Market Area South East Asia, Oceania and India says,” Ericsson has been a key part of the telecom ecosystem in the Philippines for thirty years, bringing voice and data services to millions of customers in the country. We are the first to market with solutions that enable today’s networks to evolve smoothly to the next generation of technologies. 4G is the foundation of 5G, and Ericsson is well poised to help the operators in the Philippines to transition seamlessly from 4G to 5G.”
More about Ericsson’s 5G platform
Ericsson’s new 5G platform comprises the 5G core, radio and transport portfolios, together with digital support systems, transformation services and security. Importantly, all installed base of radios from the Ericsson Radio System delivered since 2015 will be 5G NR-capable by a remote software installation. Ericsson recently completed its 5G platform with the launch of 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) commercial software, based on the recently approved first 3GPP 5G New Radio (NR) standard. The 5G radio network software complements Ericsson’s already launched baseband and 5G radios. Operators can simply activate their 5G networks and take the first steps with commercial 5G capabilities and new applications leveraging advanced mobile broadband services.
This will cater efficiently for growing data traffic and enable access to multimedia content, such as 4K/8K video streaming and virtual reality/augmented reality. According to Ericsson’s new economic study of enhanced mobile broadband, evolution to 5G will enable 10 times lower cost per gigabyte than current 4G networks. To help operators capture growth opportunities presented by new 5G use cases, Ericsson has expanded its 5G Core System offering with new capabilities to support 5G NR and also enhanced its Distributed Cloud solution.
5G will enable a USD 1.8 billion opportunity for telecom operators in Philippines
Ericsson’s 5G Business Potential report found that operators can add a revenue of up to USD 619 billion (36 percent) to their forecast service revenues of USD 1.7 trillion in 2026. They can do this by targeting the digital transformation of other industries, such as automotive and manufacturing, using 5G-IoT technology. For the Philippines, in 2026, there will be an anticipated USD 1.8 billion revenue opportunity for telecom operators addressing industry digitalization with 5G technology. The largest opportunity for operator-addressable 5G-related revenues will be in the manufacturing and energy and utilities sectors.
”5G will open up new revenue streams for operators as they go beyond being connectivity and infrastructure providers to become service enablers and service creators. 5G has the potential to enable USD 1.8 billion incremental revenue opportunity for telecom operators in Philippines.”, states Nunzio Mirtillo.
As part of its 30th Anniversary celebrations in the Philippines, Ericsson demonstrated over 20 state-of-the-art proof points to give a glimpse of the future that will be enabled by 5G. Key Highlights from Ericsson’s technology showcase include the following demonstrations:
Build your 5G Future on Today’s 4G – Efficiencies and business innovation can be created today on 4G. By running scenarios on a city model, we showcase Centralized and Decentralized Radio Architecture, Core and RAN Virtualization, Network Slicing, 5G deployment scenarios, Transport Evolution, among other technological deployments on the road to 5G.
NFV here and now – NFV is a prerequisite for 5G. It is crucial to enable efficiencies and agility to support new business. The demo showcases Ericsson’s complete distributed NFV-based core network, ready for delivery for 4G and 5G platform. It enables shorter TTM for new services and higher efficiency with short upgrade cycles.
Cellular for Massive IoT – NB-IoT and Cat-M1 leverage existing network infrastructure, open up great business and revenue growth potential for mobile operators with new services and applications. This proof point addresses the potential use cases with the new technologies and Ericsson e2e Massive IoT solutions.
Mixed Reality Mining – This demo displays the future concepts on AR and VR which can be adapted for a mining use case. It offers users a chance to experience what could be done with great connectivity, i.e. 5G, precise positioning, and augmented, mixed and virtual reality (AR/MR/VR) in a mining context.
3D Augmented Reality (AR) Collaboration – At this demo, participants view and interact with lifelike virtual objects such as photorealistic human anatomy and a 360-degree image of planet Earth. The immersive experience will be possible to be streamed in real-time using 5G in the near future.
3D AR brings a whole new level of immersive experience and interactivity with virtual objects. By sharing the immersive experience with remote participants, connected by a high-speed and ultra-low latency 5G network, this technology has the potential to change the way enterprises collaborate and for AR-based learning to be delivered. Enterprises can use such technology for remote expert assistance, training simulations and immersive collaboration.
Insight Driven Automated Operations – Data-driven network analysis in real time enables more precise service operations and Customer Experience Management, thereby creating more value. Ericsson Expert Analytics makes analytics-driven CEM a reality by creating insights based on unique real-time network correlations across different domains.
