Thoughts

Sausage Party was a dirty, dirty movie and it’s also figuratively and literally FOOD PORN. Whether that’s a bad thing or a good thing is relative. For this writer though, it’s more on the good side. We haven’t been treated to a really mature animated feature for such a long time. It’s also done by the same people who did the comedy flick “This is the End”. Well almost everybody as they seem to have forgotten Jay Baruchel in this one.

I love how awful they were with the jokes and the puns and they never asked forgiveness for it. Like that part of the song in the beginning where they reference the Holocaust with that German sauce / product (what they call it escapes me) shouts that they want to “kill the Juice”, then the camera quickly goes to the juice section where the animated juices of all shapes and sizes gasp in horror.

There’s also those moments where the Kareem Abdul Lavesh and that Israeli bagel (voiced by Edward Norton) get into numerous heated arguments over their positioning in the shelves. They then discover that they have a common friend in the form of Humus. Oh and our dear Kareem? He gets pissed that there are no 77 extra virgin oils waiting for him in the afterlife.

The movie plays on a lot of inside jokes or crass stereotyping of people. The douche is a literal and figuratively a doucebag. There’s the way he talks to people and his actions. More importantly, Rogen made sure that he calls people “bro” and then hurt or maim other foods like it was nothing. Good job.

So while Frank (voiced by Rogen) was the everyman thrust into the role of would-be-whistleblower was OK, its the characters that surround him that make Sausage Party such a big hit for me. Hell even Kristin Wiig as Brenda was entertaining with her talk about “being punished because they touched tips” or getting “spread” by an eggplant. But we have to give credits to Salma Hayek who plays Teresa Taco, the horny lesbian taco got the hots for Brenda.

I swear, the words “puta madre” will never sound as sexy as when she says it (yes even as a taco).

Viewers be wary too, this film is R-18. Don’t expect this to be shown on SM Cinemas. Ayala Malls Cinemas would be a good choice (while you’re at it check out the German Film Week too). Imagine how effing shocked I am when my nephews told me they wanted to see the film when it opens this week. Que horror. But its a good “barkada” movie and I’m definitely recommending it to these age groups. Also god damn this film for explicitly depicting drug use.

Down to my last three  points, the jokes range from “hey that’s smart AND dirty” to “oh my god they actually said that” and borders on “The MTRCB will have a field day with this movie”. I also want to add that the viewing experience was made thrice better because we saw this with none other than Joey de Leon himself. The aforementioned SS and Juice was also one of those “sabaw” moments.

Get ready for food porn. That’s all I have to say without spoiling what could be the grandest moment in the film.

Lastly the ending is so meta that it would give Deadpool a run for it’s movie. Seriously.

VERDICT:

To hell with it, If I could give Sausage Party a score of 11 I definitely would. It’s partly because of how raunchy it is while at the same time being witty. It’s a “sabaw” movie and if you’re into puns and toilet humor its definitely a movie for you.

Special thanks to Columbia Pictures Philippines. Credits also for the photos.
