Here’s Donnie Yen with a Lightsaber to Fill the Void in Rogue One
One of the more distinct moments from the recently released trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was Donnie Yen (Ip Man) kicking stormtrooper ass.
Sadly, there was nary a sight of lightsaber fights anywhere in the film. That’s because Rogue One isn’t a story following the Skywalkers or Jedis for that matter. This is about the first time the Rebel Alliance stole the plans for the Death Star which you know, was blown to bits by Luke Skywalker in Episode IV: A New Hope.
You can see the trailer below and see Yen whooping serious Imperial ass there too.
See, I told you there was something missing. Good thing folks who happen to be Star Wars fans have made significant “edits” to the Donnie Yen scenes to make it thrice as awesome.
That’s more like it.
Seriously though, don’t expect lightsabers in Rogue One because it might not happen. Interestingly enough there are a couple of theories on who Yen would be playing. First we have to establish that either (a) Yen’s character is blind or (b) he just has weird eye color like the Uchiha from Naruto-lore.
So if he is blind then we’re going full Zatoichi with him in the film; being the gang’s blind warrior. That makes sense and I relish the idea even if he’s not using a lightsaber but rather some form of intergalactic martial arts that debuts here in Rogue One. He could be part of the mercenary group that joins Felicity Jones’ team to steal the plans for the Death Star.
Then there’s the other suggestion that says Yen is a former Jedi master and his rumored blindness was caused by his tangle with the Clonetroopers during Order 66. That could work too. It also pushes for a more interesting reason to join Jones’ cause.
I dunno about you guys but regardless of shape or form Master Ip appears here in Rogue One, I’m still voting him as one of the top five characters for this Gareth Edwards-directed Star Wars movie.
