When Grant Morrison took over X-Men and turned it into New X-Men, his first act was to destroy Magneto’s island nation of Genosha and he did that by introducing Cassandra Nova and her Wild Master Mold that was sent to destroy Genosha.

Scarlet Witch said “No More Mutants” and the mutant population suddenly became “normal”.

So in this really-an-X-Men-story-but-just-wrapped-in-Empyre-branding, we get to revisit some old beats that current X-Men maestro Jonathan Hickman has woven into the new books. He already mentioned that Scarlet Witch and her actions was a great extinction level event for mutants and that she was also one of the most powerful mutants in the world so its natural that she tries to make things right. The book explores that with an initial talk with Stephen Strange and then Wanda Maximoff trying to find ways by meeting with various entities to get a way to fix things.

She got something from one of the eldritch horrors she communicated and uses the same powerful item to try and bring back the dead mutants in Genosha.

When she wakes up from what she did, she’s surprised and horrified at what emerged.

We find out later that she did bring back the dead mutants in Genosha although she raised them as the undead and not as living, breathe mutants.

And then that ties up with the Cotati invasion of Earth who wanted to use Genosha as a staging point for their attack on Wakanda. We also get additional info on the Cotati and what they plan to do which was also revealed in Empyre # 3 where we also see a reimagining of the Battle of Wakanda from Avengers: Infinity War.
