Urban Legend of the Happy Horse

So I was sitting alone tonight drinking a cold beer and I remember that old urban legend about the Happy Horse, the supposed stronger version of Red Horse beer. And for some odd reason, I felt like writing about it.

What’s a Happy Horse?

The Happy Horse is a variant of Red Horse Beer that has some odd designs. One urban legend I heard in the past was that you can get one bottle of happy horse beer in every case. And since we’re so used to buy beer in piecemeal (tingi), the tendency is it becomes a luck of the draw per case. Think of it as a rare Magic The Gathering card. You get the really rare card but you gotta buy an entire box.

The bottle is allegedly different as well with the current Red Horse looking more strong and gallant while the Happy Horse, literally is a more “animated”, almost cartoonish horse that kinda smiles and winks at us.

Here’s an excerpt from PhilUrbanlegends.blogspot.com

… But I could have sworn during my drunken college days that the H horse had stronger impact. Or perhaps it just had a placebo effect on me and my friends. We were the crazy bunch anyway who drank booze with Zest-O straws.

Here’s an additional information that was left in the comments section of PhilUrbanLegends:

About the year… it’s actually in the year 2000 that changed to the current look, but in 1992, the logo is modified and simplified. Although, looking at the back of the bottles are different, like the older one with the current design has “San Miguel Brewing Group”, while the newer ones had “San Miguel Beer Division” and currently, “San Miguel Brewery, Inc.”, It is also the same with the “Happy Horse” bottles. Also, “Happy Horse” bottles is still around today as “recycling”, a technique in the beverage companies to save money and probably recycled until 2020, Hence, it’s being used in 20 years during the change in the year 2000. And there is still have the chance to get the first logo of Red Horse dated from 1982 to 1992, 1993, 1994 or 1995 because i’ve seen one.
This could also explain why even if you did manage to get a “Happy Horse” variant, it won’t have the same “strong” effect that it had gained in terms of reputation. The bottle remains but the contents have been updated.
