Gerard Way’s Umbrella Academy Gets a Netflix Series

One of the best non-DC and non-Marvel books from the last decade, Umbrella Academy, is getting its own series on Netflix.

The title was written by Gerard Way of the band My Chemical Romance together with artist Gabriel Ba. It was published by Dark Horse Comics in the past and now its going to be a TV series.

According to Way:

I am thrilled that The Umbrella Academy has found a home at Netflix. I couldn’t think of a better place for the vision Gabriel Bá and myself had when creating the comic, and cannot wait for people to experience that world as a live action show

The Umbrella Academy TV series will have Steve Blackman (not the former WWE superstar but the guy who did Fargo) will be the showrunner for the Netflix TV show. Meanwhile series creator Gerard Way will play executive producer.

Cindy Holland, a VP for Netflix in the US has this to say about the upcoming Umbrella Academy TV show.

What drew us to The Umbrella Academy is that it’s wholly unique, visual and stylized,” said Cindy Holland, Vice President, Original Content for Netflix. “These aren’t the usual superheroes and the series will embrace the singular tone of the graphic novels – dark yet humorous, supernatural yet grounded in reality. We’re excited to see this world and introduce these unforgettable heroes to Netflix members around the globe.

The series is set for release 2018 on Netflix. The first volume of Umbrella Academy – Umbrella Academy: Apocalypse Suite was released in September, 2007 and had a full six-issue run. A sequel was released in 200 called Umbrella Academy: Dallas.
