FILM REVIEW: Fast & Furious 8

It’s high-octane action for the 8th time with Dominic Toretto and the family in Fast & Furious 8. Starring Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham and more. Opens April 15 from United International Pictures and Columbia Pictures Philippines.

I can’t believe that we live in a time where we are talking about the 8th installment of the Fast & Furious film franchise. Up until today, I still can’t believe that they’ll be making the 10th movie soon in the rate their going. But enough of that, you’re reading this because you want to know whether the film is worth your hard earned cash right. Short answer is Yes.

The complicated answer though is – it depends on you. To be honest I went into the film with high expectations. But with Vin Diesel films, you know that it can only do so much. So no soul-changing experience. Just looks of hot babes with half their asses showing, even more fast cars and explosions.

To be fair with Fast & Furious 8 though, there’s a level of 4th wall breaking in play. Plus it does feel like at some point they just gave up making “real” sense and they just ask us moviegoers to go with the flow and enjoy. Something that happens during the second act of the film. I literally whispered “fuck it, lets just do this”.

Pretty much everybody minus Paul Walker and Jordana Brewster are here in the film. New additions for this film are quite decent like Charlize Theron and Game of Thrones star Kristofer Hivju. Theron Its an interesting set of individuals working in a movie. TBH though, it feels like there’s a small vacuum seeing that they don’t have Brian in the film anymore. But we’ve all moved on from that and its time to face a brand new cinematic world.

Charlize Theron as the deadly Cipher

Fast & Furious 8 didn’t try to change anything in the formula. Some would think that would be bad while I join the others who say that it’s OK that they don’t stray from that. So expect a lot of explosions, tons of cars doing superhumanly impossible things and action stars surviving anything and everything thrown their way. We like it that way, so please don’t change anything F&F franchise.

Oh and I have to write about a cool cameo and a nice guest appearance in this movie. It was definitely such a treat and I would have liked to see more, a fight scene or two, but, then again I was totally fine with that cameo.

If they changed or shifted anything, its that they made and almost succeeded in making Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) feel more human. He goes through all this because they want did something or have someone that’s important to Dom. They make him play their cruel games and even beat his team. It’s painful to some extent to see him do this. And then the comeuppance arrives and we savor every moment.

Other stuff in Fast & Furious 8 are generic and formulaic and that’s OK especially if you “get” the film franchise. Get behind that and I’m betting you will enjoy the movie.
