The Evolution of Green Arrow and Black Canary’s Relationship thru the Years

I’m so happy that Green Arrow and Black Canary are getting back together again for DC Comics’ DC Rebirth initiative. Gone are the days when we had to waddle through #Olicity as its back to one of the most solid relationships in comic book history. Let’s take a look at how the two were through the years.

You can check out the visual evolution (sorry not in infographic form) after the jump.

The pairing really kicked off in my birthyear of 1985, I guess people just wanted to see a more grounded Oliver Queen and not the galivanting Ollie we know and love before this point.

They’ve been a power couple since then. They were reintroduced to younger audiences through Justice League Unlimited where both of them appeared as main characters in several episodes.

In 2007, DC Comics decided that its finally time for Ollie and Dinah to tie the knot. And they did so. Well kinda. ummm I guess?

DC’s first long-term forray to TV with Smallville eventually introduced new characters to the world of the not-Superman Clark Kent played by Tom Welling. In the series, Oliver Queen was played by actor Justin Hartley. Black Canary was played by Alaina Huffman. Something to note though, they paired up, but in Smallville continuity Ollie’s married to Chloe Sullivan.

Batman The Brave and the Bold also had a version of Green Arrow, which was pretty much a variation of Batman, he had an arrowcar and an arrowjet and all that. He also had Black Canary in this version, which is cute. Sadly it took awhile before they introduced Dinah in this medium.

2010 also featured a short animated feature starring Green Arrow and Black Canary. It was a great short and it also ended with Ollie pops the question.

The next year, the tandem also appeared in a few episode of Young Justice together with clone Speedy.

2013 was the start of the tough time for Queen and Lance. They were split apart by editorial under the New 52 banner which is “canon”. Good thing though we’ve got the Injustice comic book where the two are still a couple and they even have a kid. Last I checked, Green Arrow was dead but maybe in the following volumes they could have revived him.

2015 and the early parts of 2016 was the worst time for the fans of Black Canary and Green Arrow as Felicity came into the picture. They bumped off the romance between the characters played by Stephen Amell and Katie Cassidy. They almost had “Arrow” Queen marry Felicity in season 4.

But now, for the remainder of 2016, things are getting better! DC Rebirth brings back the two which started out in the one-shot DC Universe: Rebirth.

I’m picking up the GA/BC book this week and probably do a review.  For now, consider me a happy comic book geek.

Oliver and Dinah have been together since 1970. Way back before 1985. Thank god they’re back together in Rebirth.
