We’re Not Particular with the Lionsgate Power Rangers
Just released a few minutes ago is our first “official” look at the Power Rangers from the MMPR reboot movie by Lionsgate and they look like this…
According to Entertainment Weekly, who released the first look, the Rangers will “don translucent extraterrestrial armor that crystallizes around their bodies”.
So let me list down why its not working for me.
- They all look armored up. I understand that, I adore that actually. Kamen Rider 1 is back recently and he looks armored up and bulky. This one feels like they are one notch below “Lowcost Cosplay”.
- They have this Iron Man vibe in them which is scary because they’re the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and not Stark.
- Extraterrestrial armor? Where have I heard of that?
- Sure they were going for biomechanical in terms of looks but these guys totally look like bikers that got a quick paint job and flew to outerspace.
EW even had this to say on their website:
The spandex-free makeover also helps set the film apart from other big-screen franchises. “It’s tricky finding a new language for a superhero costume,” production designer Andrew Menzies (G.I. Joe: Retaliation) admits. “Ours is an alien costume that grows on them, that’s not man-made. You can’t win everyone over, but we are trying to appeal to a more mature audience and gain new fans.” Fans like the Yellow Ranger herself. “It’s the coolest costume ever,” Becky G says. “I’m gonna wear it for Halloween for, like, five years.”
We forgave them for dismantling Elizabeth Banks’ Rita Repulsa costume because there’s a promise of a costume change but for the rangers? Really bad.
Now excuse me while I watch episodes of Zyuranger to wash away the bad taste.
