Natalie Portman Out, Tessa Thompson in for Thor: Ragnarok

It looks like Thor: The Dark World would be the last time we’ll be seeing Jane Foster as “Creed” actress Tessa Thompson has been cast as a new potential love interest for Thor Odinson in Thor: Ragnarok.

That’s right, nobody called Natalie Portman to reprise her role as Jane Foster for the third Thor movie and we can really see why. But more on that later. Now we talk a bit about Thompson.

The Hollywood Reporter shared the information that Thompson would be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a character that will be appearing in various other movies. The report adds:

Details for Thompson’s part have not been revealed, but she could be the female lead as Natalie Portman, who was the female lead as Dr. Jane Foster in the previous two Thor installments, is not returning.

Our money here on Fanboy would be Monica Rambeau aka Photon (who currently appears in Marvel’s The Ultimates).

Thompson is currently filming the Westworld remake and has appeared in previous movies including Selma,” “Dear White People” and “666 Park Avenue”.

So here’s what I think they had to skip over Jane Foster. First, we have to remember that the comic book Jane Foster is currently running around the Marvel Universe as Thor. Thor Odinson is still missing-in-action after the events of Secret Wars. So imagine a moviegoer picking up Thor and getting massively confused.

Secondly there’s also the problem of how impactful Portman’s role is. Sure she wasn’t a damsel in distress but you have to wonder what lasting effect she’s had on Chris Hemsworth Thor? Let’s admit it, compared to other MCU love interests, she was the weakest link. And don’t mind that pissing match Thor and Tony Stark had in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

So yeah, we think this was a good decision on Marvel’s part. At least they don’t have to kill her which opens the possibility of a return in the near future.

Thor: Ragnarok is directed by Taika Waititi and stars Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston
